Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW)

Initially established in 2013 and facilitated by the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society, the Multidisciplinary Pain Workgroup (MPW) was convened to develop coverage recommendations to guide the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Contractor Medical Directors (CMDs) in efforts to revise all interventional pain local coverage determinations (LCDs). Through hard work and dedication from all societies involved, the MPW achieved consensus in developing collaborative recommendations, most of which were implemented by the CMDs to streamline interventional pain LCDs.

Following the success of this initial effort in 2013-2014, over the years, the MPW has been convened regularly to address many other initiatives to preserve appropriate patient care access.

The MPW societies represent over 100,000 of members dedicated in whole or in part to interventional pain management. They represent divergent backgrounds, including, but not limited to, anesthesiology, interventional pain, radiology, physiatry, and neurosurgery.
