We Urge United Healthcare to Cover Neuromodulation

Thursday, December 9, 2021

IPSIS joined 11 other medical specialty societies in submitting a comment letter to United Healthcare (UHC) urging the insurer to immediately reevaluate and overturn its Commercial Medical Policy, which inaccurately deems neuromodulation treatments, including dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) and percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), as “not medically necessary.” The Multisociety Pain Workgroup's (MPW) letter provides an overview of the evidence for the safety and effectiveness of these treatments.

Moreover, the letter expresses concern that today’s COVID-overwhelmed healthcare system, in conjunction with UHC’s lack of coverage for these medically necessary treatments for chronic pain, may be inadvertently contributing to a “new wave” of opioid overdoses.
