Volunteer Opportunities

An appointment to a International Pain and Spine Intervention Society Division or Committee is a high distinction that presents a remarkable opportunity to influence the interventional pain medicine field.

Applicants also must complete a financial disclosure. Appointments have been made for 2025. The next call for volunteers will open summer 2026.

Early Career Council:

  • Ambassador Role: Council Ambassadors perform serve on an IPSIS Committee or Division in a non-voting capacity, provide early career viewpoints on the Division/Committee that they serve on, and report to the rest of the Council on their Committee/Division’s activities.
  • Executive Council Role: The Council’s Executive Committee performs governance, steering, and administrative functions, provide input, and maintain communication with the executive leadership of IPSIS.

Education Development Committee:

  • Develops new curriculum for fluoroscopically-guided and ultrasound-guided techniques in the spine and other regions.
  • Records and/or reviews lectures for the online learning system.
  • Assesses and ensures quality of existing learning material via periodic review.
  • Attend an IPSIS Bio-Skills Lab within one year of appointment.

Division membership requires prior IPSIS Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 completion or completion during your volunteer term (includes completion of six online learning modules and one two-hour virtual discussion session).


Advocacy Committee:

  • Address issues related to promoting access to interventional pain procedures, scope of practice, legislative and regulatory affairs, and lobbying.

Coding and Reimbursement Committee:

  • Answering coding and reimbursement questions or issues submitted by IPSIS members.
  • Proactively develop coding guides, as needed.
  • Provide code set guidance with IPSIS Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) advisors to the American Medical Association (AMA).
  • Provide guidance with IPSIS advisors to the AMA Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) on the resources required to provide physician services which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) considers in developing Relative Value Units (RVUs).

Coverage Committee:

  • Review and comment on draft coverage policies for interventional pain procedures.
  • Advocate for appropriate changes to current coverage policies.
  • Proactively develop coverage policy recommendations, as needed.
  • Reach out to payers to promote the implementation of appropriate coverage policies.

Practice Management Committee:

  • Develop and promote practice management materials for use by IPSIS members.

Division membership requires prior IPSIS Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 completion or completion during your volunteer term (includes completion of six online learning modules and one two-hour virtual discussion session).


International Division:

  • Serve the international member community by identifying, prioritizing, and addressing issues and needs from various regions.
  • Implement and manage an open call for IPSIS Outreach Course proposals, review the proposals, and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.
  • Identify opportunities for international membership growth.
  • Select the European Congress Program Committee to prepare each year’s program, in collaboration with the IPSIS Education Division.

Division membership requires prior IPSIS Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 completion or completion during your volunteer term (includes completion of six online learning modules and one two-hour virtual discussion session).


Research Division:

  • Evaluate research grant applications and make funding recommendations to the IPSIS Board.
  • Develop research protocols to address important gaps in the evidence base.
  • Select the highest quality research abstracts for presentation at the IPSIS Annual Meeting, Winter Seminar, and European Congress.
  • Promote active participation in conducting and critically analyzing research, and provide mentorship to new investigators.

Division membership requires Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 and Evidence-Based Medicine Part 2 accreditation or accreditation during your volunteer term (includes six online learning modules for EBM 1 and three online learning modules for EBM 2, one two-hour virtual discussion session for EBM 1 and one two-hour virtual session for EBM 2, and successful completion of both accreditation exams).


Evidence Analysis Committee:

  • Assess evidence and publish systematic reviews.
  • Selectively review and provide commentary on external practice guidelines and publications.
  • Requirement for membership:
    • Division membership requires Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 and Evidence-Based Medicine Part 2 accreditation or accreditation during your volunteer term (includes six online learning modules for EBM 1 and three online learning modules for EBM 2, one two-hour virtual discussion session for EBM 1 and one two-hour virtual session for EBM 2, and successful completion of both accreditation exams).

Patient Safety Committee:

  • Develop and promote best practice recommendations to help ensure the safety of patients undergoing interventional pain procedures.
  • Requirement for membership:
    • Division membership requires Evidence-Based Medicine Part 1 and Evidence-Based Medicine Part 2 accreditation or accreditation during your volunteer term (includes six online learning modules for EBM 1 and three online learning modules for EBM 2, one two-hour virtual discussion session for EBM 1 and one two-hour virtual session for EBM 2, and successful completion of both accreditation exams).

Guidelines Committee:

  • Develop and update IPSIS’s clinical practice guidelines.
  • Requirements/Qualifications for Membership:
    • IPSIS EBM 1 and 2 Accreditation
    • Current or previous service on an IPSIS division/committee or as an IPSIS instructor
    • Interested volunteers will meet individually with Standards Division leadership at the Annual Meeting (or via phone if not attending the Annual Meeting) to discuss the opportunity/expectations and their qualifications.
