AMA Backs IPSIS-Supported PNB Coverage Resolution
2 hours ago
The American Medical Association (AMA) has called on CMS to withdraw or delay proposed Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) that would restrict coverage for peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) used to treat chronic pain.
The AMA’s action follows adoption of a House
of Delegates (HOD) resolution co-authored and supported by IPSIS, alongside several national and state medical societies.
The resolution urged the AMA to oppose the draft LCDs and to advocate for preserving patient access to evidence-based,
non-opioid interventional pain care.
In its letter to CMS, the AMA emphasized that peripheral nerve blocks are well-established interventions that improve pain, function, and quality of life and play a critical role in comprehensive, patient-centered
pain management.
IPSIS continues to drive a major advocacy effort on this issue and previously submitted detailed comments
on the proposed LCDs, reinforcing the clinical evidence, prevailing practice standards, and patient-access concerns that have now been elevated through the AMA process.

IPSIS, advocates for evidence-based policies that expand access to safe, effective treatments for individuals suffering from debilitating pain and stands against "black box" prior authorization models — seeking a unified, standards-based prior authorization system as mandated by CMS.
