IPSIS Urges Noridian to Revise Coverage Criteria for BVNRFA

The International Pain and Spine Intervention Society led the Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW) charge, submitting comments in response to Noridian’s proposed Local Coverage Determination (LCD) on intraosseous basivertebral nerve radiofrequency ablation (BVNRFA) and outlining concerns during the Noridian open meeting last week.

The proposed LCD prohibits coverage for patients who have non-vertebral pathology potentially contributing to their symptoms and requires screening, evaluation, psychological assessment, and diagnosis by a multidisciplinary team. These requirements lack a rational, evidence-based foundation.
