Promote Appropriate Coverage of Epidural Injections
Friday, February 5, 2021

You can help promote appropriate access to epidural injections for Medicare patients. Share the link to this page to any CAC members you know and share this information via the social media icons above.
The International Pain and Spine Intervention Society convened the Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW) to summarize the best available evidence and develop recommendations
regarding the appropriate coverage of epidural injections for chronic pain management. The resulting comment letters below are being shared in advance of the February 11, 2021, Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) Multi-jurisdictional Contractor
Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting.
The letters, signed by IPSIS and 6 other medical specialty societies, have been shared with the MAC medical directors and will be shared with CAC members for whom the participating societies have contact
information.
The letters present the evidence in support of epidural injections, highlighting the importance of accurate procedural technique and appropriate selection criteria in achieving optimal outcomes. They also outline specific coverage
recommendations related to epidural injections. It is hoped that the letters will help inform the discussion next week and promote development and implementation of coverage criteria that will ensure appropriate access to epidural injections for Medicare
patients.
