Medicare Prior Authorization Requirements for Implanted Spinal Neurostimulators

In a recent report, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General concluded that Medicare improperly paid claims for implanted spinal neurostimulators due to inadequate oversight that was needed to prevent or detect improper payments made for these services. Despite strenuous objections from IPSIS and other specialty societies, prior authorization is required when performing the procedure in the hospital outpatient department (effective July 1, 2021).
