IPSIS Advises CMS on Proper Place-of-Service Classification for New Code for Genicular RFA

On November 26, 2019, the International and Pain Spine Intervention Society (IPSIS) submitted comments to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the 2020 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System Policy Changes and Payment Rates and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment System Policy Changes and Payment Rates Final Rule.

While IPSIS supports the CMS recommendation to assign radiofrequency of the sacroiliac joint nerves (CPT 64625) to a non-office-based place-of-service, we expressed concerns with the inappropriate classification of genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a primarily office-based procedure. A survey conducted by SIS and other specialty societies in November 2018 and presented at the January 2019 RUC found that most respondents (65%) perform genicular nerve RFA in the hospital or ASC setting. IPSIS urges CMS to issue a correction to this new code (CPT 64624), adjusting the classification of this procedure to G2 non office-based.
