IPSIS & Coalition Oppose Chiropractic Coverage Expansion

Tuesday, May 6, 2025

On April 28, 2025, IPSIS joined over 100 national and state medical societies in strong opposition to S. 106/H.R. 539, the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act of 2025. This legislation seeks to significantly expand Medicare coverage for services provided by chiropractors, including granting chiropractors the title of “physician” under Medicare Part B.

The proposed expansion would remove the current statutory limitation that restricts Medicare coverage for chiropractic services to manual manipulation of the spine. In a letter to Congress, the societies emphasize that chiropractors do not complete the same level of education, clinical training, or postgraduate residency programs required of physicians. Granting Medicare “physician” status to chiropractors risks misleading patients, redistributing limited Medicare resources, and potentially compromising patient care.

IPSIS remains committed to protecting the physician-led model of care and will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize scope-of-training alignment and patient safety.
