Fentanyl Crisis: Calling for Specific Government Actions
Friday, February 7, 2025

IPSIS has joined ten other medical specialty societies in urging the US Congress to take decisive action against the growing threat of illicit fentanyl while ensuring that patients with severe chronic pain continue to receive necessary treatments. In a joint letter to the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, the medical societies emphasized the need for permanent scheduling of illicit fentanyl analogues under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) while also highlighting concerns about regulatory barriers threatening access to intrathecal pain pumps.
Additionally, the misinterpretation of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act has inadvertently restricted access to compounded medications for these pain pumps, forcing patients and providers into burdensome and potentially unsafe workarounds. The letter urges Congress to enact a targeted legislative correction to restore clear, consistent access to these therapies while maintaining appropriate oversight of controlled substances.
