IPSIS Opposes Pharmacist Scope Expansion

Monday, August 5, 2024

IPSIS has joined the AMA and other medical societies in opposing legislation under consideration in Congress that would expand the scope of services provided by pharmacists — a move that will compromise patient safety.

In a July 23, 2024, letter to Congress, IPSIS and many other medical societies expressed concerns that pharmacists receive training focused primarily on medication management, unlike physicians, who undergo years of medical school, residency, and thousands of hours of clinical training,

The letter emphasizes the importance of a physician-led, team-based approach to healthcare and urges legislators to reject H.R. 1770/S. 2477, the “Equitable Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act,” to maintain the high standards of the American health care system.
