IPSIS Urges Humana to Cover PNS

Wednesday, March 20, 2024

On March 18, 2024, IPSIS joined the Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW) in submitting a letter to Humana expressing concerns over its new Medicare Advantage policy that went into effect on January 1, 2024. This policy, which excludes coverage for peripheral nerve stimulators (PNS) used in the treatment of chronic pain, directly contradicts Medicare's established practice of covering such treatments.

The letter emphasizes the effectiveness of PNS in managing chronic pain, citing numerous clinical studies and systematic reviews supporting its safety and efficacy. These studies demonstrate the positive impact of PNS on various chronic pain conditions, including neuropathic cranial pain, post-amputation/stump pain, and chronic pelvic pain.
