Claire Tibiletti, MD, and Milton Landers, DO, PhD, Receive the Derby Distinguished Service Award

Tuesday, August 24, 2021

Two former IPSIS presidents, Claire Tibiletti, MD, a founding member of IPSIS, and Milton H. Landers, DO, PhD, a longstanding IPSIS instructor, received the Richard Derby Distinguished Service Award from the award’s namesake, Richard Derby, MD, at the IPSIS Annual Meeting on Friday, August 20, 2021, in Washington, D.C. The award is presented to IPSIS members who have distinguished themselves within the Society through their exemplary volunteer service in the advancement of the interventional pain field and the best interest of patients.

Dr. Tibiletti taught courses from the inception of the Society until 2015. As an IPSIS Master Instructor, she taught at over 30 labs. She served multiple terms on the IPSIS Board of Directors; most notably, as the IPSIS President from 2000-2002. She also served as the Chair of the IPSIS Socioeconomic Committee, later renamed the Health Policy Division, while serving on the Board of Directors from 2011-2015.

She served as an IPSIS Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates in the 2000s, as Primary IPSIS Delegate 2011-2018, and as CPT Alternate Advisor 2011-2013. In addition to time dedicated to teaching and Board service, Dr. Tibiletti spent at least 200 days traveling to meetings and representing IPSIS members’ advocacy and reimbursement interests.

Dr. Landers served on the Board of Directors from 2004-2011; most notably, as President 2006-2008, helping establish the IPSIS presence in Europe and Korea. He was a member of the IPSIS Education Division, Chair of the Division from 2004-2006, and a member of IPSIS Standards Division from 2002-2003 and again from 2011- 2018. He was a major contributor to the 2nd Edition IPSIS Practice Guidelines.

As Master Instructor, teaching from 2001 to the present, Dr. Landers instructed at an astounding number of labs — in excess of 125. He taught many courses with Dr. Charles Aprill, and developed the first â€śstandardized” materials for IPSIS workshop lectures — writing “step by step” instructions for all procedures taught in the lumbar and cervical courses, and developed, with Dr. Aprill, the competency examination for IPSIS instructor applicants. He was the recipient of ISIS’s Charles N. Aprill Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009.

This award is named after Richard Derby, MD, a founding member of the Society. Dr. Derby is an innovative researcher and distinguished clinician who, through his tireless service, advances the interventional pain field. Learn more about IPSIS awards and the nominating process here.
