IPSIS & 12 Societies Continue to Request Appropriate Coverage of Percutaneous Vertebral Augmentation

Thursday, January 30, 2020
On January 28, 2020, IPSIS and twelve other medical specialty societies submitted comments to two Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), First Coast Service Options, Inc.and Novitas Solutions, about proposed local coverage determinations (LCDs) for percutaneous vertebral augmentation for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture.

The comments express concerns regarding the LCDs’ exclusion of all fractures over six weeks old from treatment and the requirement of a four-physician multidisciplinary team to determine treatment by consensus. Revisions to the policy are suggested to address these concerns. On November 25, 2019, SIS and other medical specialty societies provided similar comments to National Government Services, Palmetto, Wisconsin Physician Services, and CGS Administrators on proposed LCDs for the same procedure.
