ISIS Finds CMS Prematurely Proposing Changes to Office Visit E/M Codes, Suggests Specific Valuations

Monday, October 14, 2019
On September 27, 2019, the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society (IPSIS) submitted comments to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the 2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) Proposed Rule.

IPSIS provided CMS with recommendations and comments regarding the valuation of specific codes in the somatic nerve injection code family, payment for evaluation and management (E/M) services, and practice expenses associated with codes used most by IPSIS members. IPSIS urges CMS to take work, time, and practice expenses for global codes into account to maintain fee schedule relativity. Additionally, IPSIS stated that the review and implementation of proposed modifications to the office visit E/M codes is premature given the Proposed Rule’s extensive coding changes and reliance upon a survey process considered critically flawed.
