IPSIS Urges CMS to Correct the Ambulatory Payment Classification for Genicular Nerve Ablation

Tuesday, October 1, 2019
On September 27, 2019, the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society (IPSIS) submitted comments to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on proposed changes to the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment Systems and Quality Reporting Programs for calendar year 2020. The current rule misclassifies genicular nerve treatments performed via radiofrequency ablation as Level 3 Nerve Injections (APC 5443). IPSIS has recommended correct assignment as Level 1 Nerve Procedures (APC 5431).
