US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) To Allow Advanced Practice RNs to Practice Independently

On December 13, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced their decision to allow most advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) within the VA to practice independently of a physician’s clinical oversight, regardless of individual state law. In July 2016, SIS joined with the American Medical Association (AMA) and 96 medical associations in urging the VA to continue supporting team-based care that makes the most of the respective education and training of physicians and APRNs as part of a collaborative framework.
